While immersing ourselves in the vibrant culture of Nepal, we have accumulated a bit of experience and insight, both big and small, that we wish had known when out semester began. To make your journey a little bit smoother, we have gathered a list of tips and tricks, that could be nice to know for your time in Nepal. Hope this helps 🙂

1. Hot water in the shower: To get hot water in the shower at Hotel New darshan, you need to turn on the sink as well. Alternatively, try showering at the same time as your neighbor.

2. Packing: Do not pack clothes that you care about, because they will be worn out, miscolored, moldy or lost. Believe me!

3. Schoolbooks: They can be purchased from former students in the “Kulturstudier sell/buy books” Facebook group, for a much cheaper price. Some students also drop their schoolbooks off at Little Windows café, where they can be bought / borrowed once you have arrived. (there is not that many there however, so maybe be rather safe than sorry)

4. Avoid mold: Leave the fan on in your room as often as possible to avoid mold, especially during monsoon season (when you leave the room as well). However, the mold is not dangerous and can be washed of most clothes/fabrics.

5. Massage: If you want a good, cheap massage go to the studio right across from Hotel New Darshan, and say you are with the big group of Norwegians. We got 60min massage for 1500 rupees (Aprox. 140 NOK). Half the price of what you get most places.

6. Adapter: Bring an adapter / converter so you and your roommate can charge several devices at the same time. Some of the rooms have this, but most don’t. Some sockets are also just too loose for regular iPhone chargers to stick.

7. Hiking: If you only have time for one hike, go for Mardi Himal!!!

8. Taxi/Uber: The equivalent of uber in Nepal is Pathao for Kathmandu and InDrive for Pokhara. Always check the price on the app and compare to the taxi price. Be prepared to bargain (It can feel a bit uncomfortable in the beginning, however bargaining is expected and a natural part of the culture).

9. SIM-card: Buy a local SIM-card. It is cheaper to buy in the city, however it is most convenient to buy it already at the airport. Most of us bought from NCell, and you can easily refill at the grocery store across from Heritage Hotel in Pokhara.

10. PS: Befriend the guys working at the hotel, trust me on this 😉
