On friday development students and spanish students had a school trip to León Viejo and Laguna del Tigre.

León Viejo

We arrived at León Viejo in our old American school bus with loud spanish music. The atmosphere was great and our driver was driving the bus like a fast running horse like always. León Viejo has been on the UNESCO’s heritage list since 2000 and was the original location of León. The place is surrounded by ruins and is the oldest city of Nicaragua.

León Vijeo was the original location of León where the vulcano Momotombo lies south from the it. Because of the vulcano, the location suffered frequent of volcanic activity. The place that was suppose to be León experienced earthquake in 1610 which ruined the infrastucture alot. This old city was also mostly buried by the continuous explosions of ash and  volcanic stone from the vulcano.

Francisco Hernadez de Cordoba (whom the currency of Nicaragua is named after) established this city. He was beheaded by Pedrarias Davila whilst the old city is known for several brutal stories. If I remember it correctly, hungry dogs were set free on indigenous/indian people so that they experienced brutal death.

Laguna del Tigre

After the guide around León Viejo, our next stop was Laguna del Tigre. It is a beautiful volcano crater filled with water.

On our way to the lagoon we got to experience the local public/collective transport. I dont even know how I should explain it. First of all, these vehicles couldn’t have looked more unstable. They made the scariest sound ever and were very shaky. Haha, but trust me, it was incredibly fun. Some of the students had to stand while other sat. When the vehicles were suppose to drive upwards, it produced so much dust that our faces got dirty. Those who were standing got the worst of it and became almost black. Extremely fun!

The internet here in León is very slow which makes it almost impossible to upload pictures sometimes. It therefore takes me tripple as much time to update my experiences here in Nicaragua. I guess having little access to wifi is an experience itself. I kinda like it!:)
