We shifted to Kathmandu. This is a brand new and completely different place from Puducherry. Even though we are sad to leave India we are all happy to be in this new city, which has so much to offer. For the occasion I thought to write about just some of the things to do and what I like about Kathmandu and especially the area we live in, Thamel.

Firstly; the most famous food from Nepal is momo (also called dumplings in other countries). These delicious little things are made with ‘maida’ flour and are traditionally filled with buffalo meat or vegetables. You can find this on any street in Kathmandu and in restaurants you get other fillings as well. My recommendation is “Momo Hut” in Thamel.

Then for those who enjoy physical activity or wants to get in shape for some after-exams-trekking there is a climbing gym and a skate park. The gym is outside and has walls for every climber, beginner to professional. The guys at the gym are more then happy to help you with securing and tying the ropes so one wouldn’t need any experience before hand.

The skate park is the first and only in Kathmandu and is a simple flat ground with two ramps and a fun-box. The owner is a young man in his twenties who built the place non-profit. The local kids skate and lend boards there for free, and outsiders have to pay a small fee for lending the boards and to skate at the ground. I would recommend going to this park just to have a look at how good some of these children are and how nice their little community is.

We also arrived in Kathmandu in time for Diwali. Diwali is a Hindu festival which is characterised by all the lights that shine throughout the city, making it look like a post card or travel ad for south Asia. There are rangoli and candles in front of every house and lights in the air. It’s a celebration of hope and the good over evil. It’s a big family event and could remind one of a european christmas. However, the gift giving is traditionally only from brother to sister and parent to child.

This town is filled with wonders. From the “monkey temple” to the national parks and mountains around it, where one could get a spectacular view of the city. All the colourful flags and the friendly people makes this a great place to study and experience yet another culture.
